San Francisco is an amazing city, but I’m coming to understand a unique downside to this area: my proximity to Silicon Valley and constant exposure to the next big thing may have desensitized me to the uphill battles that all startups face. Out here, startups are exciting, everyone has great ideas, and people are generally quite supportive. But what about the rest of the country, the rest of the world? Seeing local success story Poshmark featured in Fox News was a wake-up call: being big in Silicon Valley doesn’t necessarily mean a whole lot. People out here are quick to download the latest app and give anything a try, but ours may be a unique culture. So kudos then, to the companies that break through to the larger collective consciousness. And good luck to those who are still trying.
