Cloth App: The Virtual Closet You've Always Wanted

If you’re in your twenties and love fashion, the spark that started this love most likely came from Clueless.  Who could forget that opening scene where Cher selected her day’s outfit with the aid of her nifty computer that had pictures of all her ensemble pieces?  Since a little girl, I’ve wanted that computer program and Cloth delivers.

The app allows you to post pictures of you in your favorite outfits and categorize them seven ways: (1) everyday, (2) event, (3) evening, (4) vacation, (5) work, (6) favorites, and (7) all.  It also lets you place tags and descriptions in your entry so you can further remind yourself of which amazing outfit you wore to that thing two months ago.  Best of all, it’s linkable to all your social networks: Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.

However, my one quibble is that I think it overreaches by attempting to be too many things at once, like awarding badges to frequent posters.  Under “status,” one can earn points and unlock badges for a multitude of things such as “share,” “cloth king,” “blog baron,” and “twitter tycoon.”  Although I love the alliteration of these badges’ names, I just don’t understand the incentive behind them.  I guess like any other competitive law student and hopefully soon to be attorney, I love gaining badges to up my status for the sake of doing so.  But in the end, why do I care if I get the “Facebook fiend” badge, do I get a fun prize?  On the same token, these points that I earn from posting outfits, are these points redeemable for something as well?  I’m not too sure, and the app doesn’t tell you either.

All in all though, I am in love with the concept behind it.  I’ve been waiting for an app like this for a long time.  It’s seriously the virtual closet you’ve always dreamt of.  Up next: an app that can tell me which pieces to put together depending on what mood I’m in.  But in the meantime, I’ll be using Cloth to save all my memorable outfits and Twitter to showcase them all.  For a limited time, you can download Cloth for free, and if you wish, go ahead and link some of your favorites in the comment box below.  Fashion is meant to be shared and technology is the best medium to bring our community that much closer, so share away!
